Introduction of Pilis Experiments
Péter Ódor, Dsc, Flóra Tinya, Phd, Bence Kovács, Phd
Two HUN-REN–Pilis Forestry field experiments test how shelterwood vs continuous-cover (gaps) treatments affect microclimate, soils, biodiversity and regeneration. They vary gap size/shape and matrix, monitoring plants, fungi, many invertebrates, sapling growth, browsing and decomposition
Introduction of Pro Silva exemplary forest
Péter Csépányi, Phd
Mexikó-puszta Pro Silva demonstration area: a 9.73 ha submontane beech stand managed under Pro Silva principles since 1999 (idea launched with Prof. Hans-Jürgen Otto, then Pro Silva Europe president). All harvests for 25 years are documented for economic analysis, showcasing the transition to continuous-cover forestry, climate-adaptation steps, and gap-like oak regeneration.
Friday (Day 3)
Comparison rotation forest management and continuous cover forest management in turkey oak stands
Péter Csépányi
Comparing traditional rotation forest management to CCF forest management on a poor-quality site in Turkey oak stand.
Valkó (Gödöllő Hills) Turkey oak trials show continuous-cover forestry (CCF) matches even-aged rotation forestry; regeneration costs drive economics. CCF reduces damage and costs under drought and cockchafer grubs, working even on poor sites if natural regen is reliable.
Madas Forest – Long term effects of ctnf on forest naturalness
Zoltán Némedy, Péter Csépányi, Pilis Park Forestry Company László Madas, a forest engineer (1920-2009), was one of the pioneers of close-to
nature forestry in Hungary. In 1954, he began applying close-to-nature forest management practices in a century-old beech forest. Over the following 72 years, the forest has developed into its present form, which we will explore during the field excursion. At the beginning of the field
program, we will pay tribute to this distinguished forest engineer with a brief commemorative ceremony.
